Byway is a bike route generator. We built it to be useful without collecting anything we don't strictly need. The short version: your location and rides stay on your phone. We do not sell or share your data. There are no analytics SDKs or third-party trackers in the app.
What we collect
- Approximate location, while the app is in use. We use it to generate a loop starting where you are and, while a ride is in progress, to track your path and distance.
- Ride history and saved loops you create. These live in Byway's local storage on your device. They never leave your phone unless you choose to back them up via Apple's standard iCloud backup of your device, which is encrypted and managed by Apple — not us.
What we send to our servers
To plan a loop, the app sends your current latitude and longitude, the requested distance, your selected comfort level, and any "avoided road" corridors you've drawn, to our routing server (operated by Ample Software). The server uses these to compute a route and returns it. We do not store the request once it has been answered.
The server keeps standard short-lived HTTP access logs (timestamps, request paths, response sizes) for operational debugging. These logs are rotated and deleted within 30 days.
What we do not collect in the app
- No analytics SDKs (no Firebase, no Crashlytics, no Mixpanel, none).
- No advertising identifiers.
- No social-graph data.
- No payments or financial data — Byway is free.
This marketing website
The pages on trybyway.app (this one included) load Google
Analytics 4 so we can see how many people visit and which referrers send
them. That's it — no remarketing audiences, no ad pixels, no profile
building. Google sets a first-party cookie and may collect your IP
address and a coarse approximation of your location; you can read their
data-handling
notice for the details. If you'd rather opt out, browser-level "Do Not
Track" or any standard content blocker (uBlock Origin, Brave shields,
Safari's tracker prevention) stops the script from loading. None of this
affects the iOS app, which still has zero third-party SDKs.
Children
Byway is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your choices
- You can revoke location permission at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy → Location Services. Byway is functionally useless without it, but the app won't break.
- You can delete saved loops and ride history from within the app at any time. Removing the app from your device deletes all locally stored data.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, for any change that meaningfully expands what we collect, we'll surface a note in the app.
